Our Rating
As a life-time SPG loyalty member, St. Regis is always our hooman’s first choice when looking for a luxury hotel. Last year, we were excited when we heard that there would finally be a St. Regis in Hong Kong after all the years. We, though, find that the location is kind of underwhelming for a luxury hotel in Hong Kong (i.e. nestled among buildings with a limited view of the harbour). It turns out the location is quite convenient for us and we started going to the St. Regis Bar for Bloody Marys. We always wanted to do a stay but never had the chance until now – we can’t go anywhere except a staycation in Hong Kong.
The St. Regis Hong Kong is indeed a “curated” mansion in the heart of Wan Chai. It has a warm and cozy atmosphere of a tastefully designed house that you want to call home. We loved the art deco design with a touch of old Hong Kong. The suite we stayed at was spacious with a dining table, a huge bathroom and separate his and her walk-in closets. It’s furnished with the best quality furnitures, beddings, and amenities. And they offer complimentary Llanllyr Source bottled water.
We especially like the dining table as we could all sit together with our hooman and enjoy some room service. Without a dining table, we probably wouldn’t want to order any food. Here are some photos and a short video of the suite:
Excellent Butler Service / Check-in
Despite all of the nice “hardware” of the hotel, what really makes the St. Regis Hong Kong stand out is their excellent service. Although St. Regis doesn’t offer a club lounge, their butler service and attention to details makes it even better than those usually offered in a club lounge (well, apart from the unlimited champagne and wine). Almost every staff we met during our stay were courteous and very helpful.
Upon check-in, we were a little bit early and the suite was not ready yet. Daphne, the Director of Rooms, immediately offered us a welcome drink at the Drawing Room and had a little chat with us (we had a perfectly prepared extra spicy Bloody Mary). We felt welcomed. In no time, the suite was ready and Keith, our Butler, walked us to the suite and patiently showed us all the special features of the room. And there was a welcome note with a hand drawn Snoopy subtly placed on the coffee table. Baby Lopei felt like a VIP when he read the welcome note.
Champagne Sabrage
This is a signature evening ritual at the St. Regis hotels around the world. However, it was cancelled during our stay due to social distancing measures. We asked the butler team if there’s any chance that we could have one as we wanted a complete St. Regis experience. The butler team had gone the extra mile to arrange a private session for us and it was complimentary as part of our welcome amenity.
We went down to the outdoor area next to the Drawing Room around 5PM for the champagne sabering ritual. Flora, the Sommelier, was already there waiting for us and she took around 10 minutes to explain the history as well as the whole process to us. While our hooman was busy chitchatting with Flora, we took many pictures with the bottle of champagne and the saber. It’s great that we had the whole area for ourselves and we had a lot of fun. Our hooman did a great job opening the bottle of champagne and it was a perfect experience.
In-room Afternoon Tea
After the champagne sabrage experience, we went back to our room for late-afternoon tea. It was a tea set for two and it’s all set up and ready for us when we returned to the room. There were plenty of food for us all and we all sit together with our hooman at the dining table.
Dinner
We were still quite full when dinner time came so our hooman opted for a light dinner. We wanted to order some room service but nothing seemed interesting (though YY wanted to try the club sandwich at the St. Regis). Our hooman suddenly had a craving for roasted goose and char siu (barbecued pork) so they took a stroll to Wan Chai and looked for some yummy local barbecued goodness. At the end, we ordered the club sandwich in-room and brought the roasted goose and char siu back. It was a lovely dinner except that the club sandwich was quite plain and boring. Oh well, the best in-room club sandwich YY had was at the Sheraton Sydney Hyde Park.
Breakfast
After a good night sleep, we went down for breakfast at the Chinese restaurant. We ordered from a menu and picked the American breakfast set and the Chinese set. Both set started off with fresh juice, a bread basket and some fruits. The American breakfast was nothing special but the Chinese set came with a bowl of abalone and chicken congee which was very good. The assorted dim sum plate was not bad either. All in all, the breakfast was good but couldn’t really compare with the breakfast at other St. Regis hotel especially those in Asia.
Gym / Swimming Pool
After breakfast, we spent the morning at the pool doing nothing. The gym was closed but we went in and took some pictures. It’s well equipped and a nice environment. The pool is quite small but functional. We got some sun in the morning but it would be in the shade all afternoon according to the attendant. There were also some floats in the storeroom and the attendant would get it for you upon request. Baby Lopei of course asked for one and had a lot of fun at the pool with Baby Corn.
Check-out
We didn’t have lunch at the hotel but went out for Japanese food at the Kowloon Shangri-La. We checked out around 4PM with the butler and there was a small gift prepared for us to take home. It was a specially prepared St. Regis tote bags with our initials. And the tote bags were accompanied with a well written goodbye note and another hand-drawn Snoopy. This definitely made our St. Regis experience even more memorable. We definitely look forward to our next staycation at the St. Regis.
